the girls we once followed home are
\nnow the bag ladies,
\nor one of them is that white-haired
\nold crone who
\nwhacked you with her
\ncane.
\nthe girls we once followed home
\nsit on bedpans in nursing
\nhomes,
\nplay shuffleboard at the public
\npark.
\nthey no longer dive into the
\nwhite-capped waves,
\nthose girls we followed home,
\nno longer rub their bodies with oil
\nunder the sun,
\nno longer primp before the
\nbeautiful mirror,
\nthose girls we followed home,
\nthose girls we followed home
\nhave gone somewhere,
\nsome forever,
\nand we who followed them?
\ndead in wars, dead of heart
\nattack,
\ndead of yearning,
\nthick of shoe and slow of
\nspeech,
\nour dreams are tv dreams,
\nthe few of us,
\nso few of us remember
\nthe girls we followed home.
\nwhen the sun always seemed to
\nbe shining.
\nwhen life moved so new and
\nstrange and wonderful
