Det er ikke unormalt bands pr\u00f8ver nye numre af live, som s\u00e5 siden forsvinder sporl\u00f8st og aldrig h\u00f8res fra igen. Blandt Neil Young-tilh\u00e6ngere har der lige siden en tour i 1988, med ham og hans dav\u00e6rende orkester, g\u00e5et feberhede historier om en dr\u00f8m af en k\u00e6mpe men aldrig pladeudsendt Neil Young-sang ved navn ‘Ordinary People’. Subject: The Extraordinary “Ordinary People”<\/em><\/p>\n

To begin with, there is nothing ordinary about Neil Young’s
\n“Ordinary People”. Except maybe for the fact that it is the
\ngreatest unreleased Neil Young song ever and – should “Ordinary
\nPeople” ever be released – is destined to become another classic.<\/em><\/p>\n

IMHO, Young’s song “Ordinary People” is his Guernica –
\na masterpiece upon which to frame the debate of where
\nthe song stands relative to his other narrative classics,
\nsuch as “Cortez The Killer” or “Thrasher”.<\/em><\/p>\n

A stunning tour de force, “Ordinary People” was performed
\nfrequently during the Bluenotes 1988 tour, but has yet to re-
\nsurface in subsequent concerts or albums. Those fortunate enough
\nto have caught the legendary “Ordinary People” performances
\nduring the Bluenotes tour know that the song’s musical intensity
\nand lyrical sweep rivals few – if any – other released Neil
\ntunes.<\/em><\/p>\n

Coming in at a breathtaking 9 verses, the epic “Ordinary People”
\nmakes even the brilliant extended “Crime In the City” seem like a
\ntossed off short story. Many performances of “Ordinary People”
\nclocked in at around 15 minutes or longer. While Young has done
\nextended songs before such as, “Down By The River”, “Like A
\nHurricane”, and “Cortez the Killer”, these songs have been mainly
\ncomprised of extended solos and jams.<\/em><\/p>\n

“Ordinary People” consists primarily of a driven and
\npassionate Young spitting out his fiercest lyrics ever. In
\nconjunction with Young’s slide driven guitar work and stellar
\nbacking by the Bluenotes horn section, “Ordinary People” sizzles
\nas a blues showcase.<\/em><\/p>\n

In terms of lyricism, only the beauty and poetry of Young’s
\nmagnum opus “Thrasher” can compare with “Ordinary People”. Where
\nBob Dylan may have been more ellipitical and Elvis Costello or
\nGraham Parker may have been more direct, Young’s succinct
\ndistillation of an era reads like a Charles Dickens novel, soars
\nlike a Walt Whitman poem, and breaks the heart like an Otis
\nRedding blues song.<\/em><\/p>\n

While a shortened CITC (subtitled Zero to 60) later appeared on
\nFreedom, only circulating concert tapes reveal the true nature of
\nthe rare and legendary “Ordinary People”. Just as “Stringman”
\nsuddenly reappeared from the vaults during MTV’s Unplugged, we
\ncan only hope that we are as lucky with “Ordinary People”.<\/em><\/p>\n

In a departure from Young’s traditional source of theme
\nmaterial – himself – “Ordinary People” encompasses a broad survey
\non the state of the union as seen through the eyes of the common
\nman. “Ordinary People” is Young’s attempt to frame the plight of
\nthe common man against the obstacles and challenges of the U.S.
\nin the late 80’s.<\/em><\/p>\n

The song works at multiple levels telling the stories of the
\nordinary people – the factory workers, the bartenders, the
\nteachers. These ordinary people are trying to survive and make a
\nliving against all odds in the face of trickle down Reaganomics.<\/em><\/p>\n

“Ordinary People” is also the story of those whose aim is to
\ncapitalize on the ordinary people’s failure and inability to
\ndefend themselves. Young denounces the crack dealers who prey on
\nthe inner city children and the fat cats in their Rolls Royce’s
\nwho cruise alongside poverty.<\/em><\/p>\n

The narrative climax of “Ordinary People” occurs when Young
\nbrings his assortment of characters together for a scene where it
\nbecomes clear there will be no winner. The social commentary is
\ndead on target and speaks volumes about what Young – and
\nAmerica – sees all around us. Offering no solution, yet
\ncapturing the moment, it is a premier example of the singer-
\nsongwriter at the peak of his craft.<\/em><\/p>\n

The release of a live version of “Ordinary People” will surely
\nput to bed forever any questions about the musical genius of Neil
\nYoung.<\/em><\/p>\n

Og sangen, der nu str\u00e6kker sig over mere end 18 minutter, g\u00f8r vildt nok ikke ovenn\u00e6vnte ord og lovninger fra Thrasherswheat til skamme. Alt hvad der forbindes med klassisk Crazy Horse-era Neil Young er tilstede i et dynamisk og forl\u00f8sende epos, der virkelig l\u00e6gger sig op blandt det bedste Young nogensinde har pr\u00e6steret. Skal ikke kede med flere superlativer, men istedet bruge sk\u00e6rmplads p\u00e5 samtlige 9 vers fra den sang, der nemt helt alene berettiger et k\u00f8b af Chrome Dreams II.<\/p>\n

ORDINARY PEOPLE <\/em><\/p>\n

Two out of work models and a fashion slave try to dance away the Piccolo night.
\nThe bartender poured herself another drink, while two drunks were watchin’ the fight.
\nThe champ went down, then he got up again, then he went out like a light,
\nFightin’ for the people.
\nBut his timing wasn’t right, the high rollin’ people.
\nTakin’ limos in the neon light, Las Vegas people.
\nWho came to see a Las Vegas fight, fightin’ for the people.<\/em><\/p>\n

There’s a man in the window with a big cigar, says everything’s for sale.
\nHe had a house and a boat and a railroad car, the owner’s gotta go to jail.
\nHe acquired these things from a life of crime, now he’s selling them to make bail.
\nHe was rippin’ off the people.
\nSellin’ guns to the underground, livin’ off the people.
\nSkimmin’ the top when there was no one around, tryin’ to help the people.
\nLose their ass for a piece of ground, a patch o’ ground people.<\/em><\/p>\n

He was dealing antiques in a hardware store but he sure had a lot to hide.
\nHe had a back room full of the guns of war and a ton of ammunition besides.
\nWell, he walked with a cane, kept a bolt on the door with five pit bulls inside,
\nJust a warning to the people.
\nIn case they might try to break in at night, protection from the people.
\nSelling safety in the darkest night, tryin’ to help the people.
\nGet the drugs to the street all right, tryin’ to help the people.<\/em><\/p>\n

Well, it’s hard to say where a man goes wrong, might be here and it might be there.
\nWhat starts out weak might get too strong, if you can’t tell foul from fair.
\nBut it’s hard to judge from an angry throng of hands stretched up in the air,
\nThe vigilante people.
\nTakin’ the law into their own hands, the conscientious people. Hey.
\nCrackin’ down on the drug lord and his bands, government people. Hey.
\nConfiscatin’ all the dealer’s land, the patch-of-ground people. Yay, yeah.<\/em><\/p>\n

And then a new Rolls Royce and a company car they were racin’ down the street.
\nEach one tryin’ to make it to the gate before employees manned the fleet.
\nThe trucks full of products for the modern home, were set to roll out into the street
\nOf ordinary people.
\nTryin’ to make their way to work, the downtown people.
\nSome are saints, and some are jerks, (that’s me) everyday people.
\nStoppin’ for a drink on their way to work, alcoholic people.
\nYay, Yeah, takin’ it one day at a time!<\/em><\/p>\n

Down on the assembly line, they keep puttin’ the same things out.
\nThe people today, they just ain’t buyin’, nobody can figure it out.
\nThey try like hell to build a quality in, they’re workin’ hard without a doubt,
\nOrdinary people.
\nBut the dollar’s what it’s all about, Lee Iacocca people.
\nBut the customers are walkin’ out, the nose-to-the-stone people.
\nYeah, they look but they just don’t buy, the patch o’ ground people. Hey, hey, hey.<\/em><\/p>\n

In a dusty town the clock struck high noon, two men stood face to face.
\nOne wore black and one wore white, but of fear there wasn’t a trace.
\nA hundred and eighty years later two hot rods drag through the very same place,
\nA half a million people
\nThey moved in to pick up the pace, a factory full of people.
\nMakin’ parts to go to outer space, a train load of people.
\nThey were leavin’ for another place, out of town people. Yeah, yeah.<\/em><\/p>\n

Down at the factory, they’re puttin’ new windows in.
\nThe vandals made a mess of things and the homeless just walked right in.
\nWell, they worked here once and they live here now, but they might work here again,
\nThe ordinary people.
\nBecause they’re livin’ in a dream, hard workin’ people.
\nJust-don’t-know-what-it-means-to-give-up people.

Out on the railroad track, they’re cleanin’ ol’ number nine.
