I do think lyrics (and, generally, songwriting, which is not just about lyrics) are basically not in fashion right now. I think people are interested in vibe and production and their sort of stance and angle right now. It’s kind of anemic time all over Western culture, feels like to me. I’m not sure why. I think life is really scary right now and when people are scared they become more conservative. They don’t want to sit down and talk about whether or not their children are going to inhabit a nightmare apocalyptic hell future; they want to talk about spring break. You could see it in in the great depression where all anyone wanted to do was go to the movies and watch big expensive musical productions with a lot of dance numbers. And yeah, I think there’s a really lazy trend in indie rock right now where people feel like being really vague and borderline meaningless is somehow brave and avant-garde lyrically, and no one’s really calling them on the fact that they’re not putting anything on the table and basically aren’t trying that hard. That said, music is about more than lyrics, and if your lyrics are cool but your music is boring I tend to not be all that impressed. And music SHOULD be allowed to be fun. You have to strike a balance.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
