Som appetizer her deres gennemgang af The Crystals&#8217; kontroverseielle og ikke s\u00e5 lidt problematiske &#8216;He Hit Me (And It Felt Like A Kiss)&#8217;&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/f20Oz9Yr_So?rel=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>The Crystals &#8211; \u201cHe Hit Me (And It Felt Like a Kiss)\u201d &#8211; 1962<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Crystals recorded their first hit single, \u201cThere\u2019s No Other (Like My Baby),\u201d in prom dresses, having come to the studio directly from that high school dance; a year later, they\u2019d entered the canon of the deeply problematic. \u201cHe Hit Me (And It Felt Like a Kiss)\u201d is a fucked-up song, and everyone involved\u2014save, perhaps, homicidal producer Phil Spector\u2014knew it. Husband\/wife songwriting duo Carole King and Gerry Goffin had been inspired by a babysitter who\u2019d shown up bruised but still smitten, translating her boyfriend\u2019s abuse as an expression of love. The song flopped tremendously; magazines refused to advertise it, DJs refused to play it. Later, King and Crystals lead singer Barbara Alston both disowned it.<\/p>\n<p>To say \u201cHe Hit Me\u201d was too dark for its time feels insufficient; the song is too dark for any point in pop music, present day included. It is anti-pop. But it is that uncomfortable nature\u2014the contradictions at play between Alston\u2019s naive voice, the sickeningly matter-of-fact lyrics, and Spector\u2019s swelling funeral march\u2014that makes it so persistently relevant. Many have dismissed the song for glorifying abuse, but that isn\u2019t quite it; whether or not its creators intended it, \u201cHe Hit Me\u201d is a representation of the profoundly complicated and screwed-up realities of womanhood. More recently, pop stars who wallow in these same contradictions have made the song their own: Hole performed it on \u201cMTV Unplugged,\u201d and Lana Del Rey interpolated it in the lyrics of 2014\u2019s \u201cUltraviolence.\u201d In a 2007 interview, Amy Winehouse spoke of the song with grim empathy: \u201cMost people\u2019d be like, \u2018How dare you promote domestic violence!\u2019 But to me, I\u2019m like, \u2018I know what you mean.
