What is weird, with memory, for me anyway, is how people, places, scenarios, incidents can be lost, seemingly forever, and then with some magical trigger they are back… Morrissey and I met when we had both finished our debut albums and we were working towards sophomore offerings. He came to our Dominion Theatre show. He played me Meat Is Murder on cassette in his Kensington flat. I’m sure I found something positive to say but it couldn’t have been easy. I played him rough mixes from Easy Pieces. He said ‘James’ was my masterpiece.
